A particularly-fine exhibition of Mervyn Peake's work which includes characters from Gormenghast is now on show at the Viktor Wynd Gallery in East London. Stephen Foote has collaborated with Christian Peake and produced the most informative book about Mervyn Peake's life on Sark. It's fascinating to see just how much the island influenced Peake and his work. I'd recommend this book to anyone who's interested in that period of his life - which, of course included much of the writing of Gormenghast. He also lived there in his twenties when he was part of the art collective, The Sark Group.
Gareth Murphy's powerful performance at the Blue Elephant Theatre in Camberwell, is an absolute must for any Mervyn Peake fans. He is a truly inspired actor and has scrutinised the story and worked closely with the director, John Walton, to bring it to today's audience. The whole play is utterly absorbing, and every aspect of the production contributes to make this truly compelling.

There's also a fascinating exhibition of Lewis Peake's work in the bar. It's a great combination.
A new exhibition of paintings by Maeve Gilmore is being held at the Ancient and Modern Gallery in London from 6th November to 13th December 2014. It's wonderful work and it's well worth a visit as this is a rare chance to see it.

"ANCIENT & MODERN presents paintings by the British artist and writer Maeve Gilmore (1917-1983), which will also mark the occasion of the 50th exhibition at Ancient and Modern. Maeve Gilmore’s paintings range from her assured early portraits to the later, more exploratory and occasionally tentative, narrative scenarios, with the figure still a key element."
Painter and poet Fabian Peake presents his first definitive collection of poetry chosen from a writing practice spanning almost twenty-five years. Drawing inspiration from nature, memory, domesticity, love and art, the 41 poems in Loose Monk include Peake’s verse poems, abstract pieces and concrete or ‘shape’ poetry that employs repetition, spacing and pauses to convey emotion, atmosphere and a sense of time. The publication is designed by Fraser Muggeridge Studio and reflects the singular visual look of each poem.

Throughout his prodigious writing career Peake has consistently committed himself to an experimental approach and has influenced a younger generation of artistic practitioners including Maria Zahle, Jess Flood-Paddock and Patrick Coyle. The writing grows from his background as an artist and follows in the tradition of painter-poets like Hans Arp, Kurt Schwitters and Paul Klee. Peake says that ‘there is an unavoidable parallel between how I build a poem and the way I construct a painting.’

Mervyn Peake's father wrote a comprehensive memoir about his work as a medical missionary in China in the early 20th century. This has now been published by the British Library under the title "Peake in China", with an introduction by Hilary Spurling. It's a fascinating and well-written account his time in China and there are, of course, many references which readers of Gormenghast will recognise.Sebastian Peakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03726451215381247978noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18230978.post-42683586945520010472014-08-09T09:34:00.000+00:002014-08-09T09:43:17.590+00:00Gormenghast, by Carabosse

These are recordings of Fabian's poems read by other people (including Phyllida Barlow, Clover Peake, Stef Hirsch, Giovanna Coppola and Patrick Coyle) in the studio of Jeremy Akerman in London. Jeremy Akerman and Eileen Daly's website publishes writing solely by visual artists. They will publish five of Fabian's poems over the New Year (30 Dec to 3 Jan), one poem each day for five days.

Subscribe here to receive the poems.

Among other artists' writing on the site there is also a selection of Fabian's poems read by himself including a longer work (500 words) which is part of a project run by Akerman Daly called 'Flash 500'. This project was asking artists to produce a piece of writing (of any kind) containing exactly 500 words.

The poems employ different approaches, mostly abstract and experimental, with narrative overtones.

As a result of the energy of those involved, in particular of Peter Winnington, the majority of the papers from the conference have now been edited, assembled into book form, and published under the title "Miracle Enough". The book is heavily illustrated and there is a very warm and informative introduction by Professor William Gray, the main organiser of the conference. The book is dedicated to Sebastian Peake who, of course, worked in so many ways to promote the work of his father but who died while the book was in production.

There is more information about the book on the Cambridge Scholars website, and some sample pages available on the site if you open the "Sample pdf" at the bottom of the page.Sebastian Peakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03726451215381247978noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18230978.post-61394364279596367922013-02-21T19:36:00.002+00:002013-02-21T19:36:28.273+00:00New eventsEvents for Spring 2013 are beginning to build up. A new production of John Constable's Gormenghast play is now showing at the Bridewell Theatre in London, EC4Y 8EQ. Directed by Andrew Marchant and produced by Sedos, the City of London's premier amateur theatre company, there's much more information to be found on the link as well as booking details. We wish the company well and hope that the production is a successful one.

And now we can show you some photos of the show, on Flickr. Andy Marchant says;
"Two very special people attended last night's opening of Gormenghast: John Constable, who wrote the stage adaptation of the Mervyn Peake
trilogy, and David Glass, the commissioning director of the original
production 20 years ago - see above. It was an honour to meet them and chat about
the show. Thanks for coming! Gormenghast runs all week at the
Bridewell Theatre."
