Mervyn Peake Centenary
In July 2011 the centenary of my father's birth in China will be celebrated. We are working on ways in which this will be promoted, but already new publications have been announced, while exhibitions and talks are at an advanced stage. Other events will be announced in due course.
There has been considerable press coverage on the recent discovery of my mother's Titus Awakes, with the book due to be published here by Vintage while also appearing in North America next year. Vintage will be re-jacketing Mr Pye, and a copiously illustrated Titus Trilogy due out in July will coincide with the date of the centenary. There are also plans for an impressive, leather-bound, and extremely limited edition of the trilogy (there will be 26 copies) to be made available in summer 2011.
An exhibition of over 250 illustrations by my father to classic texts and on display over the last four months at the Swiss museum La Maison d'Ailleurs has now come down. The show has attracted much attention and has been mentioned on several occasions on both Swiss and French radio. The work will return to London shortly, before moving on to other venues both here and abroad.
Discussions are taking place about new radio adaptations, while the television series hosted by Sebastian Faulks and featuring famous villains in literature, will be broadcast shortly on BBC2. Steerpike will one of eight infamous villains discussed during the programme. Fagin, Nero and others will also make an appearance.
