Peake in China

Mervyn Peake's father wrote a comprehensive memoir about his work as a medical missionary in China in the early 20th century. This has now been published by the British Library under the title "Peake in China", with an introduction by Hilary Spurling. It's a fascinating and well-written account his time in China and there are, of course, many references which readers of Gormenghast will recognise.

This is GREAT news!! I had exchange emails with Sebastian in 2011 about his grandfather's writings and he had said the following in the emails:

" I did contemplate publishing Dr Peake's fascinating journey down the Yangtse and beyond at one
point, but I didn't push the matter very far.
It would indeed make for stimulating reading, as you suggest, whether putative missionary or not."

It is nice to see it has come to fruition!

Regards,

Eric
